Giving Pat Cox his props

5 May

The BBC reports that the head of the European Parliament is stepping down:

European Parliament President Pat Cox has said he is stepping down.

Mr Cox confirmed he would not stand in next month's elections for the EU assembly as he addressed parliament's last session before the ballot.

"Europe has been the cause of my political life. I will continue serving that cause in any way I can," he said.

Mr Cox did not comment on his future plans, but reports speculate he may want to succeed Romano Prodi as head of the EU's executive Commission.

EU leaders are expected to decide the Commission's next president by next month.

Cox has been an excellent advocate for Parliament and I am sad to Parliament lose his expertise. I hope that his replacement in the new, expanded Parliament will be able to fill his quite large shoes.
