Stop picking on Iowa already and go after the Goths

28 May

Every year the media likes to find the biggest pork projects in the federal budget and mock Congress. While it can be very enjoyable, this year's big target was teh $50 million dollars allocated for a rain forest in Coralville, IA. This is my congressional district and the "attraction" will be about two miles from my house. I was in strong agreement with the national media on the stupidity of the rain forest, but now I may have found something even more stupid — fighting the Goth culture.

Almost half of a $273,000 grant awarded in 2002 to fight the Goth culture in Blue Springs has been returned because of a lack of interest — and the absence of a real problem.

Blue Springs received the grant two years ago from the Youth Outreach Unit, money the city and U.S. Rep. Sam Graves trumpeted proudly as a way to fight a perceived Goth problem.

But $132,000 of the grant was returned because officials never found much of a problem with the Goth culture, which some students called a fad that most people eventually outgrow.

I guess since it only cost 250 times less than the educational experience for Iowa schoolchildren it didn't get teh attention that it truly deserved. I hope Sam Graves is in a safe district (and I don't mean a Goth-free district!)
