A new German left-wing?

4 Jul

A new alliance of politicians and trade unionists angry at the German government's welfare cuts has been formed in Berlin and plans to run in the 2006 election. The 'Election Alternative for Work and Social Justice', which includes prominent leftwing Social Democrats, says it will fight the welfare cuts throughout the country and put special pressure on Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. A party left of Schröder's Social Democrats is to be formed in a few months. The Social Democrat chairman, Wolfgang Müntefering, warned that launching a new leftwing party would weaken the worker movement.

What about the German Greens? Oh yeah, they aren't really a left-wing party. Why can't anyone except the labor unions recognize this essential fact? I'm too SMRT for my own good.
