Cheney indictment?

12 Jul

Stories on strange websites that are linked from Fark are not usually the way that political news spreads. However, a news website called Capital Hill Blue is reporting that Vice President Cheney faces criminal indictments in France and possibly in the United States:

Vice President Dick Cheney faces criminal indictments for illegal activities while CEO of energy giant Halliburton and also illegally intervened to secure a $7 billion no-bid contract for his former employer after his election to office, an analysis by the White House counsel’s office concludes.

The Vice President is currently under investigation by French authorities for bribery, money laundering and misuse of corporate assets while at Halliburton and also faces a U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission probe of a $180 million "slush fund" that may have been used to pay bribes.

A quick search of for collaborating evidence shows just an article in the Nation and an article in a British paper, The Observer.

While an indictment by the SEC would be more damaging to the VP politically, I can't help but think what kind of reaction an indictment by the French would have. Cheney was very much a member of the "Freedom Fries" movement and is detested by the French even more than Bush. I have enough faith in the French judicial system to believe that any indictment is not politically motivated, but you know that is what the Bushies will spin it as.

Oh, well. Just makes me glad that John Edwards is on our side.
